Song about Holden Caulfield- Green Day

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQVmudGLKXo

After doing a little bit of research on Holden I stumbled upon a song by Green Day called "Who Wrote Holden Caulfield". Because Billie Joe is extremely hard to understand here are the lyrics.

A thought burst in my head and I need to tell you
It's news that I for thought
Was it just a dream that happened long ago?
I think that I just forgot

Well it hasn't been the first time
And it sure does drive me mad

There's a boy who fogs his world and now he's getting lazy
There's no motivation and frustration makes him crazy
He makes a plan to take a stand but always ends up sitting.
Someone help him up or he's gonna end up quitting

I shuffle through my mind
To see if I can find
The words I left behind
Was it just a dream that happened long ago?
Oh well...
Never mind.

Well it hasn't been the first time
And it sure does drive me mad

There's a boy who fogs his world and now he's getting lazy
There's no motivation and frustration makes him crazy
He makes a plan to take a stand but always ends up sitting.
Someone help him up or he's gonna end up quitting

There's a boy who fogs his world and now he's getting lazy
There's no motivation and frustration makes him crazy
He makes a plan to take a stand but always ends up sitting.
Someone help him up or he's gonna end up quitting

There's a boy who fogs his world and now he's getting lazy
There's no motivation and frustration makes him crazy
He makes a plan to take a stand but always ends up sitting.
Someone help him up or he's gonna end up quitting

What I understand from these lyrics is that there is a boy, Holden, that wants to do something meaningful with his life but the lack of motivation and frustration keeps pulling him down. It also shows that we all need a little help sometimes or else we might end up "quitting". This song really portrays the apathy that caused Holden to fail out of school, it even applies to a lot of people I know and even myself sometimes.

I think it’s really cool that you found this, it really hits Holden on the head too. First with “I forgot” which we have heard him say multiple times already in the book he doesn’t (or says he doesn’t) remember what happens next (like during the fight). Then “it sure does drive me mad” is such a Holden thing to say, actually I’m pretty sure he does say it. The next line that really hits me as Holden-esque is “He makes a plan to take a stand but always ends up sitting.” I mean Holden SAYS that he could, should, would, and might do a lot of things but he rarely actually DOES anything. The line after that, “someone help him up or he's gonna end up quitting,” is also very tied in with Holden’s story because he is so lonely and isolated that he thinks about killing himself and suicide is the ultimate act of “quitting.” Like I said really awesome find, thanks for sharing it with us.

  2. Ya thanks Sierra that is a better link, and well said you can definatley take the "quitting" line as suicide.

  3. This is a cool post how'd you find this song!? I totally agree with how he doesn't have any motivation to do anything, and when we finished the book we found that out. It seems like a lot of people (like celebrities) relate to Holden's character.

  4. Alex, that is so cool you found this song! Your post is so creative, I need to work on that for mine :) but i think this song really does describe Holden really well. He lacks motivation, and it even touches on those teachers that are trying to get this kid back on track. Great post!
